How to do breath of fire: steps and beginner questions

Breath of fire is all about the exhale: short, strong breaths out through the nose as the belly pulls in, with the inhale happening on its own. It's fast, so people usually do it in the daytime.

▶ 5-minute breath of fire

The steps

  1. 1Sit upright with your mouth closed, a hand on your belly if you like.
  2. 2Breathe out sharply through your nose as your belly pulls in.
  3. 3Relax the belly and let air come back in on its own, without pulling it in.
  4. 4Start slowly, about once a second, and speed up once it feels familiar.
  5. 5Do 30 seconds to a minute, then stop and return to natural breathing.

Common questions

Dizzy or tingly? Slow down, shorten it, and stop if it doesn't feel right.

Shoulders moving? Keep your attention on the belly, with shoulders and chest as still as you can.
